Dear Midwives, With Gratitude: A Letter from a Birth Doula

Dear midwives,

I wonder if there’s truly a job as precious, as powerful, and as life-giving as yours—one that is also so closely intertwined with challenge, surrender, and, at times, real heartache. Over time, my respect and gratitude for you has only grown deeper.

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to work alongside not one, but two amazing midwives.

One of them I’ve had the honor of working with before. She carries a quiet confidence and somehow always finds exactly the right words to say. She knows when to stay back, and when to step forward—always at just the right time. She respects the wishes of her patients fully. There is no pressure. No push. Only deep trust. She offers belief, assurance, encouragement, and clear direction when it’s needed most.

That’s the thing about midwives.

They are strong, yet gentle.

They are wise, yet respectful.

They are skilled, yet trusting.

They are women who have walked their own winding paths in life, often toward motherhood—paths marked by both beauty and disappointment, joy and sorrow. To carry all of that, and still show up with such honor, respect, and courage, never ceases to amaze me.

So to all the incredible midwives: thank you.

These letters are a place where I share reflections and thoughts from the heart, and you will always hold a place near and dear. Thank you for your hearts, your hands, your wisdom, and your trust and belief in mothers, in babies, and in birth.

With love,

Kim
